Aliquot flow: Alternative / Acoustic / Rock

Aliquot Flow originate from the muddy depths of the Medway delta. Their inspiration is founded in the realisation that watching bands is extremely cool, but being part of one whose music you dig is prominently more fulfilling. From the humble beginnings in October 2005 to 'the now', all members bear gig and song writing experience, and come together with different influences to form a rich and original combined sound. Who knows where it will lead them, but all that's irrelevant as they want to go only where their music takes them.

The Amazing Mr. Smith has been described as Monty Python's answer to John Williams. His combination of mad inventions and brilliant acoustic guitar playing make him one of the funniest and most original entertainers around. The cardboard tube double bass, the musical shoelaces, the nutcracker played on the tu-tu xylophone, the blue danube on the condom harp and his 3-minute rendition of riverdance have to be seen to be believed.

As well as being on the comedy circuit for at least 10 years, he has made people laugh in every conceivable type of venue in the UK, performed on local and national TV and toured the USA five times (also Holland, Germany, Norway and Jordan). Although his act is very visual, he was recently asked to play some of his bizarre instruments on Ned Sherrin's 'Loose Ends'.

"Delightfully eccentric comic musician " - Time Out.

Go to Barber & Taylor's website
Barber & Taylor close

Kevin Barber and Mark Taylor perform an eclectic range of roots music, energised by driving bluegrass rhythms and tinged with melancholy Americana. Using a range of instruments; slide guitar, mandolin, banjo and lap resonator guitar, the duo have established a reputation for dynamic live performance.

The duo have been playing together since 2002. They share a passion for many musical forms but it is their love of the American folk tradition which underpins the music they perform together. Music by the likes of Woody Guthrie, The Louvin Brothers and Doc Watson blended with the 'country' sound of Hank Williams and Johnny Cash resonate in their repertoire along with Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams and Ry Cooder. Increasingly their own songs feature in their performances drawing on the English folk tradition and blending traditional themes with a more transatlantic sound.

Kevin's lengthy experience of playing mainly in folk clubs and pubs is a contrast to the younger Mark who played in various pop-based outfits before joining forces with Kevin to form Barber & Taylor in 2002. Kevin plays guitar, slide guitar and mandolin and takes the lead on most of the songs although many of the arrangements are characterized by the duo’s impeccable vocal harmonies. Mark is a gifted multi-instrumentalist playing guitar, dobro, mandolin, banjo and pedal-steel. He takes the vocal lead on some of the songs, particularly his own compositions.

Biggin Hillbillies close

The Biggin Hillbillies were formed in 1998 having previously played as Anglo Irish Pact (AIP), with John McDonagh on Mandolin & vocals, Bob White on Banjo, Ray Butcher on guitar & vocals and Nye Davies on Bass. They are occasionally joined by Billy Taylor on the Fiddle.

Whilst their mainstream is bluegrass music, their varied repertoire includes country and folk numbers, 50’s and 60’s pop, Irish favourites and jazz standards. As well as bluegrass standards from Flatt & Scruggs, The Stanley Brothers & Bill Munroe they also include numbers from the likes of The Country Gentlemen, Banjo Dan Lindner and Don Reno, plus of course the ever requested ‘Duelling Banjos’ and ‘Foggy Mountain Breakdown’.

Their Country list draws on the hits of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, John Denver, Jimmie Rodgers, Don Williams as well as lesser known items from the likes of Buck Owens and The Red Clay Ramblers. Billy Taylor brings a lifetimes knowledge of Irish music to the band and solid favourites such as ‘Whiskey in the Jar’, ‘Muirsheen Durkin’ and ‘The Masons Apron’ form cornerstones of their repertoire. They also include a few jazz standards like ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’, ‘Sweet Sue’ and ‘Bye Bye Blues’ in the list, often inspired by Bob’s in depth knowledge of old time favourites going back to his days of tuition from a ‘Black & White Minstrels’ banjo artist.

Simply one of the best singer/songwriters around; Bill's songs are performed live solo, as a duo or in bands of up to six members: you should hear them soon.

The sheer quality of the work is evident at once - this is, after all, a man whose voice can be heard behind artists as diverse as David Bowie, Robert Plant and Kylie Minogue, and whose writing credits range from the mainstream - the infamous PWL hit factory, commercials, TV and film music (including the 'Sister Act' soundtrack) - to the experimental: try dropping names like Yellow Note, Happyhead and 7Kings.

What is now Burn Paper Tigers had been playing for about a year, previously under the name Hospital Bombers, with Stephen Driver on bass and Chris Austin on guitar and vocals. Various musicians came and went and in the summer of 2008 Chris Taylor joined on drums and Burn Paper Tigers were formed.

On hearing Chris and Drivers early recordings, and seeing the emerging potential in the band, Dancing Turtle Records released the tracks Phillipa Hut and Maid In Old Town as a 7" single.

Previously Chris has played guitar for amongst others Lupen Crook and Kid Harpoon, and had been developing his song writing skills at some of the open mic nights around the Medway towns including The Barge's own open mic.

After spending a couple of years honing his craft on the UK’s live circuit Dan moved to Sweden and threw himself into the music scene, collaborations there resulted in two sold-out releases with, ‘The Stars Above’.

It was this recording that helped Dan to secure a publishing deal with George Martin Music. Sir George said,

"I was introduced to Dan Clews by a friend. I have always tried to support young musicians and Dan's music impressed from the first listen. He is too great a talent to ignore and it's a great pleasure to be his publisher."

Support slots for Bloc Party, Jeffrey Lewis, Air Traffic, The Good Books, Clear Lake and The Brute Chorus, in addition to airplay & live sessions on radio stations such as XFM, Absolute and the BBC have further cemented Dan’s reputation as a rising star.

Dan’s forthcoming self-titled album was recorded during sessions at Air and Abbey Road Studios with, amongst other producers, double Grammy winner Giles Martin, whose award winning work on The Beatles’ 'Anthology' and 'Love' albums has established him as one of the UK’s top producers.

Formed in March 2011, the duo brings together singer-songwriter Greg McDonald's award-winning narrative songs and fiddle virtuoso Gemma Gayner's breathtaking musicianship.

As a songwriter Greg McDonald has won awards from Rolling Stone and been called "inspired" by The Times. Greg's debut album Stranger at the Door was Q magazine's highest rated independent album of 2009, while 2011's follow up Tomorrow England was called "one of the most complete albums in years" by fRoots writer Simon Jones.

Gemma Gayner's virtuosic skill across genres from folk to jazz to classical has taken her from Deptford jazz cellars to major folk festival stages and seen her called a "powerhouse instrumentalist" by fRoots. Between them Greg and Gemma have worked with Show of Hands, Dawn Parade, The Dealers, JD & the Longfellows, and shared stages with everyone from Seth Lakeman to The Pogues.

Playing across the USA from NYC to LA with multiple east coast, south and midwest tours, as well as TV shows including performing live nationwide on FUSE and song placements with MTV’s The Real World, Hugo’s two EPs and full length album have met strong critical praise with Time Out NY noting the clever wordplay and production making comparisons to Todd Rundgren and Joe Jackson.

Folk provides the theme but jazz determines the style...

Musicians Fiona Lander and Paul Mason (collectively known as Landermason) started writing and recording songs together in 2000. Fiona (vocals, piano, whistles and saxophones) and Paul (vocals and guitars) have developed a unique sound displaying their undoubted talents as musicians. They also show the ability to draw influences from a number of styles and then create something new that defies rigid definition.

What can you say about Lupen Crook that hasn't already been said. Twisted stomach churning folkster, genius, both?

"Utterly compelling" - NME

"Original and highly concentrated stuff" - Mojo

"Lupen Crook stands alone as one of the few artists around who seriously defies categorisation. Indisputible genius, sublime stuff" - The Fly

"To say the atmosphere of a gig rests on the proverbial knife’s edge is a rare statement indeed. For Lupen Crook and his band of birds however, it illustrates just how captivating their agitated pop is - and the stop start animation of the band can be visually seen to make its onlookers flinch with expectation" - Artrocker

With 3 successful albums under their belt, Octoberman will be coming to the UK as a slightly striped down 3 piece band, but they still promise to be every bit as good!

Mark Morrissette draws heavily from the tradition of the wandering bard as he shares observations concerning the people and customs he’s encountered in his travels. Over lightly strummed guitars, his decidedly melancholic vocals ably evoke the rigours of an overnight Vietnam train or interminable drive between Toronto and New York. Melding the sensibilities of Neil Young and Jack Kerouac.

“If you've never heard Marc Morrissette's delicious brand of wilted, lush pop music characterized by organic guitars and hauntingly surreal vocals, you don't know what you're missing. I simply couldn't tear myself away from this set.” – Chartattack.com

Stuart was brought up miles from the nearest lamp post, deep in the Dorset countryside, but now lives in the urban sprawl of the Medway towns in north Kent. He isn't an angry person, but sometimes he might sound it. Stuart was once described as being "like a young Howling Wolf stuck in the body of a pasty ginger kid!", and while this isn't quite true it's something to aspire to. This is blues for singer-songwriters, songs for blues singers. His first solo album 'A Gallon of Water Makes A Mile of Fog' was released on Sun Pier Records(distributed through Cargo Records) on Monday the 29th October 2007. A second album is under construction.

"The most exciting band I’ve heard in years."
Maverick Magazine.

With a name evoking images of frozen landscapes and endless blue skies, Essex/Herts duo The Floe (Sarah Springett and Liz Townsend) produce music that encapsulates that stark beauty. Both distinctive and compelling their songs soar with tales of love, loss, longing and hope.

The Floe's journey, as their name suggests, is one of constant, natural evolution, starting in the early noughties where they honed their craft by touring the UK and Ireland extensively.

Their first album 'No Looking Back' was mixed by the Grammy Award winning Simon Gogerly and released in March 2010 to glowing reviews...

"Stunning album brimming with full-on dynamics and diversity – passion oozes from this record." - Maverick Magazine.

"Marking their arrival on the scene with this impressive debut , the opening track here provides a stirring marker for all that follows. Blessed by Springett’s distinctive vocals [The Floe form] a versatile ensemble whose songs give them every chance of mainstream success." - Rock’N’Reel Magazine.

The Quays have been playing up a storm in venues up and down the country and have built up a small but psychotic following.

After releasing 3 EP’s from the back of cars, their debut single ‘Sayonara/ Voodoo doll’ was released in 2008 on their own ‘Obtuse Recordings’ label to positive reviews. It was awarded ‘single of the month’ in ‘Sound on Sound’ magazine, and this in turn enabled the recording of their first full album.

Entitled ‘This is you...’ it was recorded at ‘One Cat Studios’ in Brixton, and was released to universally positive reviews in 2009.

During the Summer of 2009 the band played a series of acoustic shows, showcasing new arrangements of songs from their album. These shows were very popular, and a decision was taken to record an EP of these, which will be released in late 2010.

Stylistically, the band have drawn from influences as diverse as Blondie, XTC, Portishead, Ok Go and The Mars Volta, but would ask that you take these with just a pinch of salt and make up your own minds on the subject.

The Trouser Trumpets are a Whitstable based nine piece comedy band, with whom immediate comparisons may be made with both The Bonzo's and The Temperence Seven. Their repertoire stretches through an eclectic mix of tunes from old time 1920's jazz to unique reworkings of rock classics, retro TV themes and original comedic compositions. The Trouser Trumpets have brought their brand of anarchic entertainment to many festival and theatre stages over the past years with rave reviews.

The big band sound, produced by ukulele, sax, trumpet, trombone, a euphonium, washboards, drums, keys and stylophone (not to mention Kazoo) is supported by a gamut of special effects. Crowd participation and synchronized back projections add to the theatrical experience. Slapstick and music hall traditions pepper the performance.

Whether to dance or listen, the show has audience appeal which immediately crosses both age and genre barriers.

The BBC's Tom Robinson recently recognised Faid as a "stunning guitarist and songwriter" and he’s been otherwise described as ‘a young cat on fire, bristling with leashed passionate blues and folk’ - often likened to Alexis Korner, Bert Jansch and Kelly Joe Phelps. His songs, beautiful in conception and poignantly eloquent in performance, have been characterised as ‘decidedly English, wistful and modern troubadourish’ refrains, reminiscent of a time now lost.’

"For me Troy’s music is English songwriting performed with the highest integrity with no trace of ego or look at me exhibitionism. Folk clubbers, owners, festival bookers, roots labels and distributers pay attention, give this man he attention he deserves." - Tom Robinson – BBC 6 Music

There ain’t nothing nice about Truckstop Honeymoon. They play banjos and wash tubs. They sing about adultery and oil refineries. It’s break-neck breakdowns or heart-break waltzes. Like a Dodge with a burnt out clutch, their music has two speeds and no reverse. Katie Euliss learned guitar, piano and bucket bass in the streets of New Orleans. She scammed enough money from tourists to buy Lucky Strikes and smoked oysters for six years. Then she met Mike West. Part entertainer, part snake oil salesman, Mike lived by pickin’ banjo and selling cds that he claimed were a curative for hangovers and small mindedness. Together they began a perpetual tour of North America, Europe and Australia. They spent their wedding night in the Tiger Truck Stop, somewhere between Lafayette and the Atchafalya Swamp. Truckstop Honeymoon was born.

It was a tough decision for an aspiring young musician to make, but his petulance paid off and by age 16 he was signed by 'THE WHO' to record and perform songs with his band 'Cross Section' for the hit movie QUADROPHENIA which became a cult classic worldwide.
He has remained deeply involved with music over the years, working in all genres and developing his own unique style of country/folk/roots music which has earned him a reputation as one of live music's leading performers throughout the UK and Europe.
